Regulate to Relate – R & R: Integrating the Eight Limbs of Yoga for Sustainable Clinical Practice

Regulate to Relate – R & R is a 17-session continuing education series designed to support the wellbeing, resilience, and professional sustainability of mental health clinicians. The program integrates the philosophical framework of the Eight Limbs of Yoga with practical strategies for emotional regulation, ethical awareness, and therapeutic presence in clinical work.

Mental health professionals routinely hold trauma narratives, emotional intensity, and complex relational dynamics while maintaining ethical and relational presence. Without intentional practices that support nervous system regulation and reflective awareness, these demands can contribute to burnout, compassion fatigue, and decreased effectiveness in therapeutic relationships. This series explores how contemplative and somatic practices can help clinicians sustain clarity, balance, and grounded presence in emotionally demanding work.

Drawing from the teachings of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, participants will examine the Eight Limbs of Yoga as a system that supports mental regulation, ethical alignment, and professional wellbeing. Particular attention is given to the Yamas and Niyamas, which offer ethical and personal frameworks that parallel many principles found in mental health practice.

Each session combines brief didactic instruction with reflective discussion and experiential practices that may include:

  • Yin and restorative yoga postures

  • Breath awareness and nervous system regulation practices

  • Guided meditation or Yoga Nidra

  • Reflective integration exercises connecting the material to clinical work

Physical participation is optional and all practices are adaptable for individuals with varying levels of mobility and experience.

In addition to the educational content, each session also includes light snacks and casual, stress-free networking time for participants. Clinicians are invited to share business cards, professional resources, and information about services or materials they have created, fostering community connection and collaboration among local professionals. Each gathering will also feature a brief educational presentation from the monthly sponsor, highlighting resources or services relevant to mental health practice.

Sessions may be attended individually or as part of the full 17-session series.
