Exploring Autism with Matt Lowry
In this episode of Transitional Objects, Bridget and Laura welcome Matt Lowry, a Kentucky-based licensed psychological practitioner who is autistic, specializes in autistic-centered therapy and autism evaluations, and hosts The Autistic V.O.I.C.E. Project.
Matt shares how frequently autism is misunderstood by professionals, why masking leads to burnout and serious health impacts, and how profit-driven systems and ableism shape diagnosis and “treatment.” The conversation explores cross-neurotype communication mismatch, the limits of common assessment tools, and the overlap between autism and ADHD (including AuDHD and PDA, often mislabeled as ODD in schools). Matt also discusses late diagnosis, family “pipeline” realizations, and the importance of accommodations, co-regulation, and community that builds a life around real needs rather than conformity.
